Helping Anyway
We have all done something for someone that really needed it. We were not sure he would appreciate it or take advantage of the opportunity it afforded. He might not keep his word to repay what he asked to borrow. He might try to take further advantage of our generosity.
Christ came here because we really needed help. He was willing to endure his brutal death at the end, even though he knew many of us would not take advantage of the opportunity it afforded, even though he knew some of us would try to take advantage of his grace.
We have three things to do here this morning: we must make sure to appreciate what he has done, make sure to take advantage of the opportunity he has made possible, and make sure not to presume on his kindness. The more demanding thing is to “do the right thing” ourselves to help those who really need help even without having any guarantee that they will appreciate it, profit from it, or regard responsibly our attempt to be like Christ to them.
