Beyond Words

Ideas, words, and symbols are not real; so thinking, talking, and observing rituals do not accomplish anything in themselves. They do not ‘become” real till they become “actions.”

When we do something we experience something, and not before. A communion service is for bringing our ‘selves” into the real presence of the “Living Word” so our behaviors become impacted.

Realizing such a simple point can prompt us to choose to do, and so to experience, the difference that being with Christ makes in daily living.

The symbolic gesture that we call “communion” will become real tomorrow as we interact with people around us. What the loaf and the cup refer to is what makes that difference take place; the symbols help bring the real thing to mind.
