The Last Temptation
Jesus’ ministry began with pointed temptations designed to divert him from his purpose as Messiah. His ministry ended with one of even greater importance: “Come down from the cross, and we’ll believe in you!” (Matthew 27:40-42).
That temptation would have had tremendous power, reinforced by excruciating pain and by arrogant taunts from passersby, soldiers, the other victims, and religious leaders. Coming down from the cross would have verified his disciples’ belief in him. It would also have relieved his mother of watching his agony. But by coming down from the cross to prove he was the Messiah, he would have disqualified himself from being the Messiah. So we give tribute here to his strength of will and extreme love for us in not yielding to this last temptation.
