A Concise Truth: John 3:16

Virgil Warren, PhD

“Because God loved the world so much, he gave his only Son

that whoever trusts in him may have eternal life.”

Each word in this most familiar verse hangs heavy with meaning.

“Because God . . . ”

who was before the rest of reality,

the reason for everything else,

the origin of all that is,

the agent behind what all happens, especially in regard to what this observance means.

“God loved.”

Love describes all positive personal relations within deity as Father, Son, and Spirit; between God and us, and between all of us.

“God loved the world.”

This point looms large in so many ways. God’s love here was not for angels or for righteous people, but for those liable to perishing (cp. Romans 5:8). It was not just for an arbitrary chosen few, for one race or nation descended from Abraham, but for whoever. It was offered as a worldwide option—for us.

“God loved the world so much that he gave.”

By nature, love aims outward: it gives. It gives itself for the joy of others, and finds fulfillment in emptying itself into those who need (Philippians 2:7). Love stands alternative to self-centeredness and serves to replace it.

“God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son.”

Love can be measured by how much its provider is willing to forfeit in order to help. This example stands out particularly because God had no obligation to retrieve us from a situation of our own doing. More often than not, the offender initiates the effort of reconciliation; but in this case the One offended took the initiative because he cared so much.

Love triggers love in the ones it helps. so our inspiring text proceeds to say, “that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.”

Our whole life we give to him in response to his life first given for us. Observing this bread and fruit of the vine stands for the whole life that we live out henceforth in love.
