Bestowing Grace

One age-old question asks why God created mankind. Probably the best answer is that he created us to bestow himself on as a person.

That answer resembles why people choose to have children. They do so despite knowing the risks, the resulting limitations, the added responsibilities, and the possible disappointments that come from having children who can act contrary to their parents’ guidance and even their own best interests. Parents use backup systems for retrieving such departures.

Jesus demonstrated that same motive and attitude in the extreme when he went to the cross for us. Besides his boundless creativity, he made a way for our boundless redemption. He demonstrated bestowing himself on us.

It does not take much to keep something so prominent in our minds. This brief gesture of taking a pinch of bread and a sip of grape juice keeps before our eyes the image of Jesus on a cross bestowing himself on us for our eternal welfare. He is God’s backup system for dealing with our departures: grace.
