Communion in Eternal Connection

Virgil Warren, PhD

The Son of man “has the keys to death and hell” (Revelation 1:18). This description reminds us of the eternal aspect of salvation through him. What God gives on the basis of the Son’s righteousness is more than forgiveness for a specific sin, for one kind of moral failure, for just past sins, or even for sins along the way after we accept him as Savior. His benefit carries on through death and eternity, particularly the deliverance from hell as permanent separation from God in the end.

Communion is not for refreshing salvation itself but for refreshing our awareness of it and appreciation for it. As “friends are friends forever,” so we “will ever be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:17). We won’t need further provision or have to worry about being cut off from friendship with our creator, sustainer, and redeemer.

The Person and work of the One we honor here “is able to present us faultless before the presence of his Majesty will eternal joy” (cp. James 24). As the Lord’s joy followed suffering, so ours will follow every detractor we have experienced, even the ones we brought on ourselves.

This communion today has eternal connections.
