Jubilation
For us the jubilation on Palm Sunday connects with the resurrection next Sunday, the resurrection of the son of David, who comes to us in the name of the LORD—to be crucified Friday.
The Triumphal Entry does not announce conquest of one kingdom by another but progress from one kind of kingdom to another. The triumph does not take place between two nations but between two kinds of things—from a political system to a personal fellowship.
Riding into Jerusalem that day, Messiah set up a cascade of culminating events that moved through his final week of teaching, his arrest and trials, his crucifixion and resurrection and ascension to the subsequent dispensing of the Spirit on Pentecost forty days later so his church could begin in its fulness, Those events covered an eight-week period that featured the fifty days from Passover to Pentecost, a total time beginning and ending on Sundays.
Observing these emblems provides an identifying mark of Messiah’s church. The giving of the Spirit at its establishment means that by receiving this bread and cup, we acknowledge his ongoing presence and influence over our conduct of life, We express our jubilation at living by the Spirit in the presence of the son of David, who has come to us in the name of the LORD.
