Psalms Chapter 40

                                                For the Choir Director. A Psalm of David

1 I waited patiently for the LORD;

      he listened to my call for help.

2 He brought me up out of the pit of despair,

            out of the muddy clay,

      set my feet on solid rock,

       and made my footsteps secure.

3 He put a new song in me, a song about praising God;

         other people will hear it, see what he’s done, and trust in him.

4 How blessed people are that trust in the LORD

         instead of turning to proud or deceitful people.

5 LORD my God, you’ve done so many amazing things;

      your good intentions for us are too many to tell.

      Nobody compares with you;

      if I tried to tell about your wonderful acts,

            I couldn’t recount them all.

Ps 40:1-5

6 Your don’t delight in sacrifices and meal offerings;

      you haven’t required burnt offerings and sin offerings;

            you’ve pierced my ears. [you gave me a bodyLXX.]

7 Then I said, “I’m coming;

            it’s written about me in the scroll;

         8I delight in doing your will, my God;

            I have your Law at heart.”

9 In the great assembly

         I’ve proclaimed the good news about goodness

I didn’t hold back

10 or keep to myself the truth about your goodness;

      I spoke openly about your saving power,

            about your enduring love and truth.

Ps 40:6-10

11 LORD, don’t withhold your mercy from me;

      let your enduring love and truth keep protecting me.

12 Troubles beyond number surround me,

      and my own sins overtake me

             till I can’t see any way to escape them.

13 LORD, please hurry and help me.

14 Embarrass and humiliate those who keep trying to destroy me;

      disgrace the ones that delight in hurting me.

15 Make them appalled at their disgrace

      who say to me, “Aha, aha!”

16 Make them happy who look to you,

      who love your salvation and chant,

      “The LORD is great.”

17 Keep me in your thoughts

                  because I’m in misery and need you,

                  my helper, my deliverer.

Don’t delay.
