Psalms Chapter 89

A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite

1 I’ll sing forever about the LORD’s enduring love

      and make known his faithfulness to every generation,

2 because I’ve said, “You build up enduring love;

      in the heavens you establish your faithfulness.”

 3The LORD said, “I’ve made a covenant with my chosen one;

      I’ve sworn to David my servant,

                  4‘I’ll make your descendants secure forever

            and build up your throne to all generations.’”

Ps 89:1-4

5 The sky praises your wonders

      and extols your faithfulness in the assembly of your holy angels.

6 Who in the sky can compare with you?

      Who among the heavenly beings is like you,

         7a God greatly respected in the council of holy angels

      and awesome above everyone around him?

8 Lord GOD of Hosts, who is like you?

         You’re completely faithful.

9 You rule the raging sea;

            when its waves rise up, you quiet them.

         10You’ve crushed Rahab like one that’s slain

            and scattered your enemies with your strong arm.

Ps 89:5-10

11 The sky is yours; the earth belongs to you;

      you’ve founded the world and everything in it.

12 You’ve created north and south;

      Tabor and Hermon shout for joy over you.

13 You have a powerful arm and a strong hand;

      you lift your right hand high.

14 Goodness and justice make the foundation for your throne;

      enduring love and truth proceed ahead of you.

15 How blessed people are who know the sound of joy,

         who walk in the light of your presence, LORD.

16 In your name they celebrate all day;

      your goodness lifts their spirits.

17 They glory in your strength;

      your blessing honors them.

18 Their shield belongs to the LORD;

      their king belongs to the Holy One of Israel.

Ps 89:11-18

19 Long ago you said in a vision to your holy people,

         “I’ve crowned a great man,

      chosen from the common people.

20 I found my servant David

      and anointed him with my holy oil.

21 My hand will make him secure;

         my arm will give him strength.

22 His enemies won’t outsmart him;

         sinful people won’t oppress him.

23 I’ll crush his adversaries

      and strike down those who hate him.

24 My faithfulness and enduring love will be with him,

         and I’ll make him honored.

Ps 89:19-24

25 I’ll establish his rule as far as the sea

      and set his control over the rivers.

26 He’ll call out to me, ‘My Father,

         my God, the Rock that keeps me safe.’

27 I’ll make him my firstborn,

      the highest among the kings on earth.

28 I’ll keep my enduring love for him forever

         and confirm my covenant with him.

29 I’ll make his descendants permanently secure,

      his throne as eternal as the sky.

Ps 89:25-29

30 “If his descendants leave my Law

            and don’t follow my judgments,

         31if they violate my statutes

            and don’t keep my commandments,

         32then I’ll bring a rod to bear on their sin

            and stripes on their iniquity.

33 But I won’t break off my enduring love from him

      or deal falsely in my faithfulness.

34 I won’t violate my covenant

         or alter what I’ve said.

35 Once I’ve sworn by my holiness,

         I won’t lie to David.

36 His descendants will continue permanently,

         his throne will last like the sun with me.

37 It’ll be secure as permanently as the moon,

         as faithful as its witness in the sky.”

Ps 89:30-37

38 But, you’ve thrown him away and rejected him;

      you’re angry with your anointed.

39 You’ve spurned the covenant with him

      and profaned his crown in the dust.

40 You’ve broken down his walls

      and brought his fortresses to ruin.

41 Everyone that passes by plunders him;

      he’s become a disgrace to his neighbors.

42 You’ve raised up his adversaries

      and made them celebrate.

43 You’ve turned back the edge of his sword

      and haven’t made him stand in battle.

44 You made his splendor cease

      and threw his throne on the ground.

45 You’ve shortened his youth

      and covered him with shame.                                           Ps 89:38-45

46 How long, LORD,

      will you conceal yourself,

      will your anger burn like fire?

47 Remember how long life is.

      What emptiness have you created people for?

48 Who can live without dying?

         Can anyone avoid Sheol?

Ps 89:46-48

49 Where’s your former enduring love

         that you faithfully swore to David?

50 Remember the scorn your servants endure,

      how I carry many people’s insults inside me

      51 that your enemies have used for taunts,

      that they’ve mocked your anointed one with.

52 Bless the LORD forever!

                                                                        Amen and Amen.
